Intellectual Property Enforcement in Online Marketplaces

Michael Doane,

Assistant Professor of Law


In the new age of digital sales and distribution, IP enforcement must adapt to novel challenges. Prof. Doane will discuss approaches to identifying and addressing infringement done through online platforms such as Amazon and eBay.

Michael Doane became a full-time assistant professor of law in 2025. He joined the Akron Law faculty as a visiting assistant professor in 2023, after teaching as a part-time adjunct faculty member for several years. Previously general counsel at Kent Displays, Inc., in Kent, Ohio. Prior to that, he was principal at Miles & Stockbridge P.C., in Tysons Corner, Va. Earlier, he was a partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm Adduci, Mastriani & Schaumberg LLP.  He specialized in international trade and intellectual property litigation.

Forum Shifting and Shopping in Patent Litigation


Presenter  from The University of Akron:

Kristen Jakobsen Osenga,
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs,
Julie and John Nowak Faculty Research Scholar
and Professor of Law


This presentation will examine how the changing landscape of patent policy affects forum selection both domestic and international. Prof. Osenga will talk about the effects of injunctions, funding and disclosure, and trends in forum shopping.

Dean Kristen Jakobsen Osenga teaches and writes in the areas of patent law, antitrust, and legislation and regulation. Some of her recent scholarship focuses on standard development organizations, patent eligible subject matter, patent licensing firms, litigation and remedies for patent infringement, and patent law reform. She has written numerous law review articles on these and other topics, as well as book chapters and op eds on various aspects of patent law. Additionally, she has spoken on these issues at many academic conferences and bar events. Dean Osenga is Chief Policy Counselor for the Inventors Defense Alliance, as well as an active member of the Federal Circuit Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
