Speaker: Calvin Griffith, Retired Partner, Jones Day
Come to this program and learn from veteran trial lawyer, Cal Griffith, as he discusses the highs and lows and numerous twists from the years-long trade secret battle between CODA Development and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Cal Griffith is a nationally recognized trial lawyer whom clients turn to for their most important intellectual property cases. He has tried multiple patent cases and other commercial disputes to juries and to the bench. As lead trial lawyer in patent cases, Cal has won jury verdicts that total more than $3 billion and obtained numerous defense verdicts. He was named in the 2026 edition of The Best Lawyers in America®.
Before he retired earlier this year, Cal's practice involved a wide range of technologies for companies such as AbbVie, Canon, Eaton, General Electric, Goodyear, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and Procter & Gamble. His intellectual property litigation experience includes numerous cases involving patents, trade secrets, and copyrights, litigating cases in district courts throughout the United States as well as the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). He has won jury trials and summary judgments for plaintiffs and defendants. His patent cases have involved diverse technologies, including software and systems, computer hardware, semiconductors, medical devices, consumer products, and biotechnologies.

This panel will explore lessons from recent high-stakes trade secret cases, including Danieli Corp. v. SMS Group, Inc. (W.D. Pa.), providing practical tips for in-house counsel on avoiding potential pitfalls and guidance for outside counsel on preventing critical errors.

Tom Koglman John Goetz
John Goetz has more than 36 years of experience defending companies in complex business and tort litigation. He has defended companies such as CNX, Doncasters, Parker Hannifin, Penske Automotive, Pilatus Aircraft, Mitsubishi Aircraft, R.J. Reynolds, SMS group, Textron, U.S. Steel, Yamaha, and WESCO in courts across the United States, Canada, and Europe. John has litigated commercial disputes; defended clients in trade secret, product liability, and toxic tort actions; and represented clients in grand jury investigations. He obtained several injunctions against the United States government from enforcing provisions of the Affordable Care Act in a landmark case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
John is a recognized authority in aviation and transportation litigation and leads Jones Day's airlines and aviation industry initiative. A licensed pilot, John has defended airlines and aviation manufacturing companies in cases involving commercial and general aviation accidents worldwide. He was on trial teams in aviation litigation involving the crash of a former Missouri governor's plane and in USAir Flight 427. He led the team defending Parker Hannifin in SilkAir Flight 185, FlashAir Flight 604, and EgyptAir Flight 990. John also counsels clients in NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) investigations following aviation, rail, and other accidents.
John is the administrative partner for Jones Day's Pittsburgh Office.

Tom Koglman practices intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent and trade secret litigation. He has experience in a variety of fields, including chemical compositions, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices.
In 2016, Tom was a member of the trial team that achieved the record-breaking patent infringement verdict for Idenix Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Merck & Co.), the largest infringement verdict in U.S. history. After a two-week trial, the jury ordered Gilead Sciences to pay $2.54 billion in damages for sales of sofosbuvir-based medicines, including Sovaldi and Harvoni, for its infringement of an Idenix patent related to the treatment of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Tom served as a police officer for 12 years. He held various positions including patrol supervisor, patrol officer, and instructor. He was certified by the state of Ohio as a police academy instructor, firearms and use-of-force instructor, evidence technician, armorer, and SWAT officer.
